À propos de Dr Brigitte Nicole
I am an artist, curator, filmmaker and scholar currently living and working in France. I hold a PhD in Film Studies (Creative Practice) from the University of Essex, where my interdisciplinary doctoral research focused on international Surrealism and its contemporary legacy.
I also hold an MA in Aesthetics and Politics from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and a BS in Journalism and Art History from Boston University.
From 2019–2021, I taught undergraduate students at the University of Essex as a Graduate Teaching Assistant and Occasional Lecturer, including courses in Documentary and the Avant-Garde and Approaches to Film and Media.
Alongside my academic work, I am a practicing painter and curator. I have exhibited internationally and completed an artist residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. This combination of academic research, teaching, curating and making art shapes the way I teach: I want students not only to understand art historically, but to feel comfortable looking closely, asking questions and developing their own ideas.
I am a native English speaker, and lessons are taught in English.

I offer engaging, personalized online lessons in Art History and Visual Culture, taught entirely in English. My courses are designed for university and art-school students, practicing artists, and anyone who simply wants to deepen their understanding of art.
Lessons can focus on Modern and Contemporary Art, Surrealism, the historical avant-garde, film and visual culture, museum and exhibition studies, or close analysis of individual artworks and artists.
I also offer support with Art History essays, research projects, dissertations, artist statements, portfolios and applications, as well as one-to-one critiques and mentoring for practicing artists.
My teaching is conversational and discussion-based. Rather than simply memorizing names and dates, we will look closely at artworks and explore the historical, political, cultural and philosophical contexts that give them meaning.
Lessons are adapted to your interests, level and goals, whether you are studying Art History formally or simply want to learn more about art.
