À propos de John
I’m a singer. I’ve been one for more than twenty years: opera houses in Germany and Portugal, the Bridgewater Hall with the BBC Philharmonic and the Hallé, recordings with the BBC Singers, and more requiems than I can count. I still perform.
Along the way I found the thing I’m really here for: sitting across from an adult who has quietly believed for years that they can’t sing, and watching their face change when they realise they were simply never shown how. I’ve written a book about it.
I trained in voice and performance in South Africa and the UK, completed postgraduate study at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, and took masterclasses with Mark Oswald, formerly of the Metropolitan Opera, the London tenor Anthony Roden, and the South African dramatic soprano Carla Pohl. I’ve taught singing for seven years.

Every lesson is one-to-one and built around your voice, not a fixed method. We start by listening: what your voice does well, where it tightens, and what you want from singing. Then we work on the foundations that change everything: breathing that supports rather than pushes, releasing tension in the throat and jaw, and finding a tone that is free and your own.
A typical lesson begins with a warm-up tailored to you, moves into technical work, and then applies it to a song you want to sing. You leave with a few clear exercises to practise, never a long list.
I teach beginners who have always believed they can’t sing, choir singers who want more freedom and stamina, people returning to singing after many years, and performers preparing for auditions and concerts. Classical, musical theatre and popular styles are all welcome.
Lessons are in English, online wherever you are, or in person in Luxembourg. I also speak Letzebuergesch.
